The Fabric

手拭い (Tenugui)

Kanji Meaning
手 (te) means “hand,” and 拭い (nugui) means “to wipe.”
手拭い translates directly to “hand cloth.”

Historical Use

Tenugui are lightweight cotton cloths traditionally used in daily life in Japan. They have served many purposes, including as towels, head wraps, gift wraps, festival accessories, and household cloths.

They are commonly seen at festivals, in bathhouses, and in craft and trade settings. Because of their versatility, tenugui became both practical items and carriers of printed imagery.

Design Characteristics

Tenugui are typically rectangular and printed using dye techniques such as chusen, which allows color to penetrate the fabric rather than sit on the surface.

Designs range widely and may include:

• Seasonal motifs
• Calligraphy or shop names
• Geometric repetition
• Nature imagery

Patterns often extend edge to edge, as tenugui are traditionally left with unfinished edges.

Material and Texture

Tenugui are made from lightweight cotton. The fabric is breathable, quick drying, and becomes softer with washing and use.

When incorporated into garments, tenugui fabric introduces lightness, graphic clarity, and everyday cultural reference.

Care Instructions

Care of Cotton

This garment is crafted from cotton, a natural fiber often used in Japanese daily wear and work garments. Cotton is resilient yet responsive to its environment. With thoughtful care, it will soften and gain character over time.

Washing

• Hand washing in cold water is recommended
• For machine washing, use a gentle cycle with cold water
• Use a mild detergent free from bleach or brightening agents
• Wash separately, especially for indigo or naturally dyed fabrics
• Do not rub aggressively or wring tightly

Drying

• Gently press out excess water. Do not twist
• Lay flat or hang to dry in the shade
• Avoid direct sunlight to preserve color depth
• Do not tumble dry, as heat may cause shrinkage

Ironing

• Iron on a medium setting suitable for cotton
• Use a pressing cloth for naturally dyed or textured fabrics
• Avoid excessive pressure on hand stitched or sashiko areas

Storage

• Store in a dry, well ventilated space
• Protect from prolonged humidity and direct sunlight
• Air occasionally during long term storage

Handling

• Natural dyes may transfer slightly when new
• Friction against rough surfaces may soften or distress the fabric over time
